Alicante tourism information: What to do?

Sports, Golf and Active Tourism Sports, Golf and Active Tourism
With the obvious exception of winter sports, practically all other types of sports can be indulged in here, from horse riding to aerial sports, from tennis to shooting. There is one excellent location in Alicante for sports, which is the so-called "Parque Deportivo Tossal", concentrating in one single perimeter the finest public installations in town, such as the Central Pavilion, the Athletics Stadium, the swimming pool complex, the gymnasium centre, the José Rico Pérez football stadium, the Sports City and the sports grounds of the hippodrome. In some of these facilities world championships as well as European and Spanish events have been held.

The inner area of the harbour is the site of the Alicante Sports Marina and the Royal Regatta Club. The latter has a smaller port area near the skeet shooting range. Along Albufereta Beach is the Costa Blanca Yacht Club. There are plenty of golf courses to choose from. The Alicante Golf Club, designed by Seve Ballesteros, is located on Playa de San Juan, and there are three other options in the environs: "El Plantío" in Bacarot, a satellite town outside Alicante, "Club Bonalba" in Mutxamel, and "Alenda" on the Madrid road in the town of Montforte del Cid.

Shopping
For many visitors, shopping is an important part of their stay. Who can resist the temptation to take a memento home, or purchase a garment which cannot be found anywhere but here? In Alicante, you'll find all the opportunities you need to practise this particular kind of "sport".

The choice is yours -from authentic local handicrafts, such as ceramics from Agost, bags and baskets from Gata de Gorgos, rugs from Crevillente, the latest designer clothes, footwear from Elda, embroidery, fashion jewellery and leather goods, to the more generalised goods available at depart, ment stores in the city centre.

Nightlife in Alicante Nightlife in Alicante
Due to its mild, inviting climate, Alicante has an easy, carefree nightlife all year round, although the summer season obliges it to continue into the wee hours of the morning.

There are many places to have a drink or a bite to eat around town, but we can particularly recommend the old city centre, known as El Barrio. You'll find bars, cafés, taverns, cervecerías, pizza joints, mesones... each with its own style and personality, where the music never stops, from salsa to jazz, not to mention rock, sevillanas and others.

The "modern" zone (between Alfonso El Sabio and the Explanada) offers other types of entertainment, with elegant pubs, restaurants with famed cuisine, discotheques and dance salons, all with the most sophisticated of décors, where the nightlife is no less enthusiastic than elsewhere. This area is "La ruta de la Madera" (The Wood Route), which receives this name because most of the spots in this area are decorated in wood, much like America's western saloons. In Summer, enjoy the nightlife in the Playa de San Juan.

Paella Food and Drink in Alicante
The famous Mediterranean diet has set its stamp on the cuisine of Alicante. It is characterised by the use of local ingredients guaranteeing a freshness and quality recognised worldwide. The fruit and the huge variety of vegetables are grown in Alicante's market gardens using centuries-old irrigation methods; fish and seafood is captured every day and served within hours of capture while the meat and cured sausages are produced in the nearby mountains. These, then are the essential ingredients of a cuisine where rice is king.
